DOMAIN 6: ORGANIZATIONAL EVALUATION AND MONITORING
Item 1
To what extent does your organization regularly assess the level of STS among staff?
Strategies:
Organizations need to monitor the impact of STS among staff on a regular basis to be able to be proactive and responsive to staff needs related to indirect trauma exposure.
In order to create organizational safety, it is critical that staff are self-monitoring, and that the organization is not overseeing the monitoring or looking at individuals level scores.
Staff can be encouraged to complete self-rating measures for STS on a regular (e.g., quarterly) basis and to process results with their supervisor (but not be asked to share their scores).
Organizations that want to track aggregate STS scores can ask staff to complete a self-rating scale and submit the results confidentially.
Implementation Resources:
Assessments
Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale (STSS), a brief measure of STS with subscales for intrusion, avoidance, arousal, and negative alterations in cognition and mood.3
