Strategies:
- Organizations need to monitor the impact of STS among staff on a regular basis to be able to be proactive and responsive to staff needs related to indirect trauma exposure.
- In order to create organizational safety, it is critical that staff are self-monitoring, and that the organization is not overseeing the monitoring or looking at individuals level scores.
- Staff can be encouraged to complete self-rating measures for STS on a regular (e.g., quarterly) basis and to process results with their supervisor (but not be asked to share their scores).
- Organizations that want to track aggregate STS scores can ask staff to complete a self-rating scale and submit the results confidentially.

Assessments
- Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale (STSS), a brief measure of STS with subscales for intrusion, avoidance, arousal, and negative alterations in cognition and mood.3
- A self-scoring electronic version of the scale is available.
- Professional Quality of Life Scale, a 30-item measure with subscales for compassion satisfaction, burnout, and STS.4
