DOMAIN 2: CREATING AND SUSTAINING A SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE CULTURE
Item 3
To what extent does your organization have clear practices in place to create and sustain organizational psychological safety?
Strategies:
Address stigma that may be associated with acknowledging the impacts of the work and help-seeking behavior. In order for individuals to feel safe within the organization, they need to feel that it is acceptable to speak up and share when they are being impacted by the work, when there are concerns with how the organization is responding to trauma exposure in the workplace, or when they make a mistake or are uncertain with how to proceed with a client.
Provide regular opportunities for staff to offer input and feedback around the work environment, policies, procedures, and practices.
Implementation Resources:
Online Learning
“Diagnosing Team Culture in Your CAC” is a recorded training module featuring a discussion about the question, “What distinguishes a pretty good team from an amazing team”? The answer is culture. Without a strong, positive, and psychologically safe culture, teams will never reach their full potential. This workshop explores the Team Leader View model from Team Coaching International that provides a comprehensive framework for assessing both the productivity and positivity indicators that influence a team’s success. (The module is available at no cost through the NCAC Virtual Training Center. Log in to access module.)
“Introducing Psychological Safety,” led by Greg Flett (Southern Regional CAC) is a 48-minute module that focuses on how to create psychological safety on an MDT as the facilitator. It is specific to MDTs but provides a good overview of the concept and is applicable to teams in general.
“Is Your Workplace Psychologically Safe?” is a 33-minute podcast featuring a discussion with Dr. Sandra Bloom and Michelle McQuaid, and it explores how workplace well-being programs can benefit from understanding the best practices of trauma theory and attachment theory.
