DOMAIN 2: CREATING AND SUSTAINING A SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE CULTURE
Item 11
To what extent does the organization have guidelines that strongly discourage staff from sharing graphic trauma details with one another both during formal meetings and informal connections?
Strategies:
To manage the amount of trauma exposure that staff are exposed to, it is important to set clear guidelines around not sharing graphic details about cases when it is unnecessary.
Having a mutually agreed upon low-impact debriefing process in place is important.
Leaders and supervisors should model using low-impact debriefing.
Supervisors should regularly remind staff to use low-impact debriefing during informal peer interactions.
Supervisors should intervene when staff begin sharing unnecessary graphic details during meetings.
Supervisors should check in with staff as to how debriefing is working for them and offer support as needed.
Implementation Resources:

“Low Impacting Debriefing,” a two-page protocol developed by Tend Academy to assist supervisors and staffing in debriefing colleagues after exposure to a distressing situation but in a way that does not “slime” them with the details.
