To what extent does your organization actively encourage and promote informal opportunities for peer support and/or mentoring?

Strategies:

  • Promote informal peer support by holding staff lunches and celebrations, suggesting walking groups, and ensuring that staff have time in their schedules to connect with each other.
  • Utilizing team-building exercises can enhance peer support. Exercises may include things like teaching others new things about themselves, discussing likes and dislikes, and engaging in problem-solving tasks together. Fostering more open communication among staff can also help boost morale.22
  • Staff should be encouraged to use low-impact debriefing during informal interactions with peers to prevent “sliming” each other by sharing graphic details of client trauma.

Cultural Considerations

The organization must be respectful of cultural considerations to help seeking and help giving and asks staff how and when they would like to give and get support. For example, some staff may have difficulty seeking help because of stigma or the cultural belief that seeking help suggests weakness.
