DOMAIN 1: RESILIENCE-BUILDING, STAFF HEALTH, AND WELLNESS
Item 3
To what extent does your organization regularly remind staff of the agency’s mission and/or encourage them to create a personal mission statement?
Strategies:
Enhance meaning-making in staff to reduce STS by keeping them connected to the organization’s mission and purpose. For example, having the agency’s mission statement posted in a common area of the agency as a daily reminder to staff and/or including the mission statement on electronic communications or agency letterhead. Leaders and supervisors can regularly refer to the agency’s mission and link job responsibilities and outcomes to the purpose of the work.
Invite staff (during supervision or a team meeting) to create a personal mission statement. This may include:
Why I chose to do this work?
What is the goal or purpose of my work?
What impact I hope to have on others?
How will I take care of myself while taking care of others?

Activities
Personal Mission Statement from the “What About You? A Workbook for Those Who Care for Others” (p. 45), is an activity that asks staff to write a personal mission statement by identifying why they do the work they do and what brought them to their field of practice. This can be done in a staff meeting or retreat or in individual supervision.
Podcasts & Videos
“Start with Why – How Great Leaders Inspire Action,” a Ted Talk by Simon Sinek (18 minutes). In this motivational video, Sinek helps us refocus on the reasons why we do the work we do. Leaders and supervisors can show the video (or a pre-selected part of the video) and discuss the agency’s and staff’s “whys” during a staff meeting or retreat.
