DOMAIN 2: CREATING AND SUSTAINING A SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE CULTURE
Item 5
To what extent does your organization clearly define and communicate that STS is an occupational hazard and not an individual issue?
Strategies:
During new staff orientation, this message should be clearly stated in conjunction with discussing what supports and resources are available to staff.
Organizational leadership should regularly provide the message that STS is an occupational hazard and not an individual issue during staff events, in written communications, and during formal and informal conversations with staff.
Supervisors should reinforce this message during supervision.
All of this messaging should accompany any resources, support, practices, or policies related to STS in the organization.
Adding a section on to your CAC’s website about STS and the support available to staff is another way to create a culture that acknowledges the organizational responsibility for supporting staff wellness.
“What is secondary traumatic stress?” is a post from the Children’s Cove CAC website that provides information on STS and how its organization addresses it, reducing the burden for staff.
