DOMAIN 1: RESILIENCE-BUILDING, STAFF HEALTH, AND WELLNESS
Item 14
To what extent does your organization encourage staff to make use of external social supports (e.g., friends and family) to help them cope with STS?
Strategies:
Leaders and supervisors can ask staff about their supports outside of work and can encourage them to engage with their social supports as a strategy for enhancing their resilience in the face of trauma exposure. These supports may include friends and family as well as community programs (e.g., recreational, spiritual).
In a high-stress or crisis situation, leaders and supervisors may ask staff if they would like to contact a personal support person and can also recommend that staff seek social support when they leave work to guard against isolation.
If staff report that they have no one to talk to outside of work, it may be helpful to link them to a community support and/or crisis line. With permission, it may be helpful to ask if the staff member would like to be contacted by a supervisor or peer to check in.
