DOMAIN 1: RESILIENCE-BUILDING, STAFF HEALTH, AND WELLNESS
Item 4
To what extent does your organization actively nuture a sense of hope among staff?
Strategies:
Help increase and sustain hope among staff and MDT members by expressing positive expectations and confidence in staff’s ability to achieve positive outcomes.
Share “success” stories (e.g., children and families who have healed from trauma, positive case or team outcomes, stories of resilience) at team meetings. Conclude staff meetings by asking team members to share their success stories or “highs” of the week.
Implementation Resources:
Activities
“Hope Rising” worksheet helps staff set professional goals and create an action plan for achieving them. The worksheet can be done in supervision or as a group during a staff meeting or retreat.
“Songs of Hope” team activity (page 46) asks staff to make a list of songs that speak about hope. Staff members take turns humming a few bars of one of the songs on their list and others try to guess the song. Write the song titles and artists on a flipchart and create a Hope playlist to share with staff.
“Make a T-Shirt” team activity (page 47) asks staff to decorate a t-shirt with the theme: What gives you hope? Have staff share their t-shirt with the group and discuss:
What can the organization do to help sustain this hope?
What can you as an individual do to help sustain this hope?
What can you do for others?
The t-shirts can be displayed or kept by participants. This activity can be adapted by asking staff to draw a picture on paper or write about what gives them hope or by creating a hope collage using images and words from magazines.
